Collar Tie Roof
A short span roof without a ceiling joist or other tie at the wall plates. A collar tie is used to create greater head height.
Couple roof
The simplest of all the ridged roof, a roof with no ties to stop the rafters spreading. Suitable for short spas only,
Couple Close Roof
A simple ridged roof with ceiling joists acting as ties at the wall plates.

The joints between the ties and the rafters can take a few forms, from a bolted connection (see below) to the halved (part dovetail) joint that I show above. Actually it would not be a full halving joint in either member but more likely a third cut out of each. A basic principal is to not to make something weaker at the expense of good looks.

With the addition of ties in the form of ceiling joists the roof can span larger distances and carry greater loads.
