Cripple Rafter, Creeper Rafter

A short rafter connecting a hip rafter and a valley rafter. Also called a valley creeper.

Valley jack rafter.

A short rafter connecting a ridge board and a valley rafter.

It seems as though the terminology of these rafters seems to change not so much as country to country but cripple rafter, state to state and team of roofers to team. So as a result creepers get called cripples with the addition of the terms hip or valley for good measure.

Similarly jack rafters sometimes get referred to as either hip or valley jacks.
