Gable
The vertical triangular end of a pitched roof. Upwards from the wall plate line.



a gable end

The the gable-end or gable-wall generally refers to the whole wall, right up to the apex of the ridge. It is then all made out of the same material with no visible joint. As in the sketch above.

Many times it is convenient and more cost effective to keep all the walls level, and then when the roof is fixed then the framer walls in the triangular-gable to make a feature of it.
