Notched Floats
In hand tools. Steel floats with notched edges used for spreading adhesive. Mainly used by ceramic tilers to get an even bed.

Iceramic tiler's floats

Used mainly by ceramic tilers these steel floats nearly always come in the same general size, but the size and the depth of the notches changes, to suit the depth of the tile adhesive bed needed. Sold at all tile shops and good hardware stores.

A similar notched flat speader is used by joiners and cabinetmakers when spreading contact adhesive. The depth and poitioning of the notches give a precise and regular application of the material that is being spread. The tools have to be kept at a consistant angle to the surface to keep the amount of adhesive even.
