Round End Step
A bottom or lower step of a flight of stairs, wider than the standard steps that has one or both ends in the shape of a semicircle.

a round end step

A very common method of building the last step of a stair. It is purely for decoration and it does take up a touch more room than if the last step was a standard one with the newel post going down to the ground.

The newel post is set into the step of course and this gives extra strength and support for the newel.
