RPM
Revolutions Per Minute. The speed rating of a machine and the tools that are fitted to it. It is critical to use the correct tools, discs or blades in any particular machine. Over revving of disks can cause them to shatter!
Rim Speed
The speed in metres or feet per second that a cutting tool travels.
Feed Speed
The rate by which work is fed through a machine

A dremel multi-tool
  • The small saw revs faster, why is that? All woodworking cutters have a desired cutting rate, so many metres or feet per second. With round cutters and saws it is called rim speed. A smaller diameter tool has to rev faster to achieve the same cutting speed. Think about wood routers revving at 22,000 rpm.
    • That's why you should use ONLY the recommended blades sizes or cutters.
    • That's why you should let the tool do the work. By this I mean don't push it so hard that the motor is overloaded and starts to slow down.
