scotch valley
A method of constructing a variation to a rectangular plan without the use of valley rafters. The method that all Multinail roof truss manufactures use.

Also known as a blind valley or a California valley in the US

A Blind Valley

  • The blind valley is far superior to the standard traditional framed valley using valley rafters, creeper and jacks in one critical area. STRENGTH. I can not imagine a structural engineer even contemplating a traditional design.
  • It is the only way to go when adding an extension to an existing building. It leaves the existing rafters in place.
  • A "California valley" has one main drawback. It requires a wall or a beam across the "neck of the TEE" to support the main rafters, so it can not be used for an open cathedral type (no ceiling) type of roof.

"What can be added to the happiness of a man who is in health, out of debt, and has a clear conscience?
All for ourselves, and nothing for other people, seems, in every age of the world, to have been the vile maxim of the masters of mankind."
