Stub Tenon
A short tenon set into a shallow mortise that does not go the whole way through the the member. Also known as a blind tennon.

a stub tenon

These tenons are quite commonly used in mass production furniture manufacture with glue alone being the method used to hold the joint together.

Other methods of holding the joint are wooden pegs, dowel or screws.

stub tenons in a groove

The sketch above shows a method that I used to use when making our own flush paneled doors. A ladder frame is made up and the groove is quick to produce compared to using a mortiser.

secret wedging of a stub tennon

A very efficient and satisfying joint is shown above.

  • The joint has to be exact. Dry assemblies are recommended without the wedges but one they are used then there is no return.
  • Take a chamfer off the edges of the tenon to allow air and excess glue to be expelled
  • The mortise is slightly undercut to all for the wedges.
