Knee brace
A brace between a post and beam, the bottom chord of a roof truss and the support, or a stiffener in a portal frame.

In the photo above the knee-brace is marked 5. It is the angled brace between the column and the rafter.

As in everything to do with structural engineering small items can mean a lot. The truss on the right is able to span a longer distance than it's counterpart without the braces.

Where looks are not important these braces can either increase the span or increase the strengthof a design.
