A wooden hand tool with a few serrated metal cutters for surfacing soft stone.

Here is a fairly simple tool that obviously has a long history. Used before the advent of machinery. It is a simple wooden block with a handle and any number of scutching inserts set into the sole and at the front edge. It would work in much the same way as the "Surform" type rasps.

These tools would only work of course in very soft stone. At the right is a typical layout of the underneath. I have only seen a couple of these, but I would assume that they come in various lengths, much the same as carpenters hand planes. With long ones being used for large stones.
