Fascia board
A horizontal board fixed vertically to the ends of the rafters
Metal fascia.
A roll formed sheet metal fitting that is replacing the timber fascias on residential work.

eaves layout
Define: Fascia - A section through the eaves showing a timber fascia.

In the sketch above I have shown a groove at the back of the fascia board for the eaves lining. This lining would be say a flat compressed cement sheet, say 6mm thick. Apart from the groove for the lining, there are a coupe of others. These grooves were made in the back of the timber in an attempt to stop the timber cupping.

metal fascia
Define: Eaves fascia - A metal fascia from the inside showing the fixing details.

Advantages of metal fascias over timber:-

  • Cost, they are cheaper per lineal metre and cheaper to fix.
  • The profile form of the fascia helps to keep the material straight and it is a fairly easy task to fix long lengths "dead straight" that do not move once fixed.
  • The material comes in all the normal roof sheeting colours and as such it is low maintenance.
  • It is possible in some areas to use mobile roll forming machines. A guy rocks up on the job with one of these in tow, he measures up and rolls on site every piece of fascia board on the house. He only allows a small amount for waste on each length, so there are no extra transport costs, and no joints even in lengths that are far to long for road transport.

Note for novices! The clips are fixed first to a pair of sting lines on the rafters. Then the fascia is hooked onto the bottom lug of the clip (where the lining groove is) then it is swung into a vertical position and because the top of the clips are sloped, the top of the fascia can be sprung into position.

It is not threaded in from one end, like a set of idiots I that once saw trying to do!
