Galleria Roof
From the Italian word for gallery. The term is now loosely used to mean a roof over and between existing building to create a roofed public leisure and shopping space.

Hays Galleria on the Thames

There is a welcome trend in cities around the world towards renovating and increasing the usability of old buildings, rather than just demolishing them and building completely new structures. There are some brilliant examples of this in London, UK, along the banks of the Thames where many of the old waterside warehouses have been upgraded.

The Hayes Galleria above is a case in point. The roof structure uses totally modern structural steel and glass, yet it pleasingly references the arched ribs and columns of the time when the buildings were originally built.

roofed shopping galleria in Singapore

This roof in Singapore uses prefabricated adjustable nodes between the lattice members, and for strength and stiffness uses tensioned wires.
