Define: Hipped Roof - A roof sheeted with "corrugated iron" or roll formed "Colorbond" sheet steel.

The advantages of hipped roofs are:-

  • To a large amount they are self bracing with opposite ends pushing inwards, so they are inherently strong in relation to wind forces.
  • These roofs have level eaves with the benefit of proving greater rain protection for the walls. The level eaves make it easy to fit gutters all around the roof.
  • The eaves can be made quite wide and they provide shade can increase thermal efficiency and energy savings can be made.
  • A hipped roof is lower with less roof space to add a loft or bedroom.
  • They are harder to access if maintenance is required in the roof space.
